The Ride to Cure Diabetes

How would you like to have a private century ride where you were taken care of every step of the way? Welcome to the Ride To Cure Diabetes.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has developed a cycling event format that is perfect for cyclists looking for a reason to ride. Commit to raising $4500 or more to support the JDRF in funding research to cure diabetes – and they will offer you a first class cycling experience.

First, you'll receive personal coaching as you get ready for your ride (chose a distance of 30, 50, 62 or 100 miles). Next, your travel to the event is covered, along with your meals, accomodations and more. When you get there, you'll meet people from all over the US who have joined in for the ride, but never more than 300. These rides are big enough to have great energy while remaining small enough to feel personally inviting.

2008 event sites include Santa Rosa CA June 26-29, Asheville NC August 7-10, Whitefish MT September 11-14, or Death Valley CA October 16-19. For specific details please visit the Ride to Cure Diabetes website

I first joined in with the JDRF events in September 2002 when they offered a ride in Austin TX. I drove down to offer technical support along the route - but was invited to ride instead. I was hooked. After attending several more rides with them, I was asked to be their National Assistant Coach - so I now help them coach riders across the country. In 2005, I began to assist them more by producing one of their rides. In 2006, we produced 3 of their events. In 2007 we produced 4 events for JDRF and assisted at 2 other events.

In 2008 riders from the Dallas area are planning to ride in the Whitefish MT event in September. If you want to get more information on how you can join us for this adventure, send an email to Dick Hester.

I have ridden all their venues - and feel that this is one of the best kept secrets in the cycling world. If you want a really first class cycling experience where you are really taken care of AND you want to make a difference, join us for a Ride To Cure Diabetes event.

JDRF, the leading charitable funder and advocate of juvenile (type 1) diabetes research worldwide, was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile diabetes – a disease which strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin-dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. Since inception, JDRF has provided more than $900 million in direct funding to diabetes research. More than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education. JDRF’s mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
